We carefully choose materials like recycled PET, organic cotton and leathers from a tannery that received a silver rating for its reduced energy use, reduced waste and quality water treatment. One or more major components contain at least 50% certified organic material, such as organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown on certified organic fields without pesticides, artificial fertilisers and herbicides and is just as soft as conventional cotton but has less impact on the environment.

Rubber tyre waste is one of the world’s largest environmental problems. When disposed of in landfills, tyres take over 80 years to decompose, polluting water tables and providing breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects. 1.2 billion tyres are disposed of each year globally with 7 billion currently in landfills. Green Rubber is a rubber compound derived using a patented process called DeLink™ to devulcanize waste rubber. The devulcanized rubber can then be reused as a new raw material for items such as outsoles. By 2012, Green Rubber intends to recycle the equivalent of over 200 million discarded tyres every year.

One or more major components (i.e. outsole, upper, lining, midsole or insole) contain at least 50% recycled polyethylene therephthalate (PET), the plastic used to make fizzy drinks bottles.

The Timberland Green Index™ rating is a score that rates a product (through manufacture) on its climate impact, chemical usage and resource consumption on a scale from 0 to 10. The lower the number, the smaller the environmental impact.
