THE TIMBERLAND COMPANY SELECTED BY FORTUNE MAGAZINE AS ONE OF THE 100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR
STRATHAM, NH, January 10, 2007 – The Timberland Company (NYSE: TBL) today announced it has been ranked 78th among the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by FORTUNE magazine. The company’s commitment to employees and the communities in which they work and live has helped Timberland gain this prestigious recognition every year since the list’s inception in 1998.
Companies are selected for the list based on the results of a random survey of employees, along with company-supplied information on culture, philosophy and benefits. The employee survey is designed to evaluate a company’s policies, practices and philosophies, and accounts for two-thirds of the scoring.
We are truly honored to receive this award,” said Jeffrey Swartz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Timberland. “At Timberland, we are proud of our place on the list, but we also recognize our obligation to continue to earn it.”
FORTUNE identified Timberland’s commitment to community as a factor of distinction. Through the Company’s Path of Service™ program, each employee is offered 40 hours of paid leave each year for community service and they are encouraged to give their time and share their passions with their communities. Since the Path of Service™ program began in 1992, Timberland employees have engaged in over 430,000 hours of service in communities around the world.
As a natural extension of the Path of Service™ program, Timberland created the Service Sabbatical to allow employees to contribute to their communities in a deeper, more long-term way. The company offers employees a variety of paid sabbatical options, from a short-term disaster relief sabbatical providing 2 – 3 weeks time off to assist with disaster relief efforts (established in the wake of Hurricane Katrina) to a more traditional sabbatical which grants employees up to 6 months’ leave to focus their time and talents at a nonprofit organization of their choice. Timberland also offers a more flexible “Work n’ Serve” sabbatical option which provides employees the opportunity to work part-time while also serving part-time at a nonprofit.
In addition to offering community-focused employee programs, Timberland also provides programs which support its commitment to environmental stewardship. The company provides a $3,000 incentive for employees to purchase hybrid vehicles – an increasingly popular employee benefit, and one that furthers the company’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2010.
The “100 Best Companies to Work For” list and related stories appear in the January 22, 2007 issue of FORTUNE, available at www.fortune.com today.
